Biography —
Jie Zhang is an Associate Dean in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences for the social and behavioral sciences departments at the University of Kansas. He is also a Professor in the Department of Linguistics, where he served as department chair from 2021 to 2024.
Professor Zhang holds a B.E. in E.E. from Tsinghua University in Beijing and a Ph.D. in Linguistics from UCLA. His research focuses on sound patterns of languages, particularly patterns of linguistic tone. He uses psycholinguistic and neurolinguistic techniques to study how speakers produce and perceive tone and learn tone patterns in their language. His research has been supported by multi-year grants from the National Science Foundation and the Chiang Ching-Kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange. His work has appeared in journals such as Phonology, Journal of Phonetics, Journal of the Association for Laboratory Phonology, Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, Language and Speech, and Journal of Neurolinguistics. He served as the “Phonetics and Phonology” section editor for Language and Linguistics Compass from 2018-2020, and he currently serves on the editorial boards of Journal of East Asian Linguistics, Lingua Sinica, and International Journal of Chinese Linguistics. Professor Zhang regularly teaches courses on Phonology, Structure of Chinese, and Introductory Linguistics. His teaching has been recognized by a Silver Anniversary Teaching Award and a CTE Excellence in Teaching Award at the University of Kansas.
